The web exists as one of the services that run on top of the internet, the underlying network that lets computers talk to each other. While services such as email and file transfers all use the internet, they aren’t part of the web as it specifically refers to the system of interconnected pages that can be accessed through a browser.
It’s a dynamic and interactive medium that can exist in perpetuity or for a brief moment, and be responsive when desired. The preservation capabilities of the web being so manageable also serve as a unique form of time capsule that could otherwise be more difficult with other mediums. The resources on the web exist as addresses, links, documents, with varying purposes such as being informative, serving as tools, or simply as forms of entertainment. There isn’t necessarily inherent linearity in the web itself, though imposed structure can provide direction, the format ultimately existing with the intention of endless possibilities. There also isn’t central gatekeeping, or need for identity, meaning anyone can theoretically publish anything without the necessity of the anxiety of notoriety associated with one’s self.
This malleable nature of the web allows it to also serve as a creative medium in its own right. Movement, changes, responses, the web allows for all kinds of variety of expression with a flexibility that is not inherent in other creative mediums. The web itself is also collaborative in nature, linking pages to one another, or even involving building a single work through the efforts of numerous individuals.
